Students Aren’t the Only Ones Burdened By College Loans!

This fall, as many students have headed back to college, parents are thinking about how to pay for their kids’ education. Parent loans are one way to do it, but, as with any decision to incur debt, it’s important to get the correct information about the loan before signing on the dotted line. Failure to do so can have devastating consequences, as shown by the NBC News article below.

The Anatomy of a Successful Budget

I think most everyone agrees that it’s important to live on a budget. However, budgets are NOT one size fits all. Just like with a diet, if you can personalize your budget to fit your family’s needs, you’re more likely to stick to it, as this article from MSN Money suggests.

What items can you not live without in your budget?

Five Ways to Save Money on Vacation

Summer is here, and it’s vacation time for most of us. There ARE ways to save money on vacations, if you know where to look. Here are some tips:

1) Rent an apartment instead of a hotel room – Often, renting an apartment is cheaper than renting a hotel room, and a good way to get extra space for the money – two bedrooms and bathrooms, etc. Also, renting an apartment can save a ton of money on eating out, because you have the ability to cook at least one meal a day (breakfast). Also, the added benefit is that you have a built-in tour guide in the apartment’s owner or rental agency – many are happy to give you insider tips about what to see and where to go while you’re there. Just make sure to rent from a reputable agency or website.

2) Read Tripadvisor.com – Tripadvisor.com is a free travel information website, organized by destination. Almost every city you can think of has a travel forum, where you can ask questions to locals and destination experts for free. You can also find out about unpublished deals, the best tours to take, etc. It’s an invaluable resource.

3) Shop early for airline tickets – Airline ticket prices generally change three times a day during the week and once a day on the weekends, and the best prices are found at the beginning of the week. Shoot for Monday – it’s proven that most consumers buy their tickets on Tuesdays, and airlines know that. Give yourself time to find the best deal.

4) Don’t rent your car at the airport – Airport car rentals are more expensive because the airport locations charge an extra fee as required by the airport, and rates are higher. If your hotel isn’t too far away, ask if the hotel has a free shuttle from the airport to the hotel (or take the short cab or mass transit ride to your apartment). Then, once you get to the hotel, rent a car from a neighborhood rental location. You will pay lower rates and less taxes, and many car rental companies will come to the hotel to pick you up for free.

5) If you rent a hotel room, ask for a free upgrade – Hotels often set aside rooms for upgrades for their loyal or dissatisfied customers. However, you can often get a free upgrade by just asking when you check-in. It’s doesn’t cost you anything to ask!

Here’s wishing you safe travels and a wonderful vacation!
